History of John Elijah Pickett

Grandpa Pickett was a horse breeder according to an old Bill of Sale that Dad gave to Al (my sister) this is a copy.  The Fine Blooded Horse, BLACK-HAWK MORGAN Will stand the ensuing season, public days excepted, on FRIDAYS and SATURDAYS at J. A. McKnight’s Mill at INGRAHAM; the rest of the time at my own stable, half a mile north-west of Wilsonburg, on the Wakefield road, and will be let to mares at FIVE DOLLARS the season.  Trading or moving a mare forfeits the insurance.  Money to be paid as soon as the mare is ascertained to be with foal.  Care will be taken to prevent accidents, but no liability should any occur.  Season commenced the 1st of April and ends the 15th of June.

Black Hawk Morgan was sired in Indiana by Mitchell’s trotting horse, Morgan.  Morgan was imported from VERMONT.  Young Morgan’s dam is a Morgan Mare and a good Trotter, he is 5 years old, 16 hands high and well made.  The world can’t beat him for style.  He is black as a crow, and will trot well when trained.  Farmers are invited to call and examine him before breeding.  He is a sure foal getter.

JOHN E. PICKETT, OWNER and KEEPER I do not know what year the Pickett’s moving from Noble Illinois to Butler Missouri driving mules, one balked on main street of St. Louis and blocked traffic.  Officer helped to unhitch and substitute another, before they could go on.

John Potter, a sister’s husband was with them, many years later he told my sisters Clara and Al about it.  Milt Braxton, a cousin was along too.
